Nelson Mandela was awarded the Freedom of the City of Cardiff on 16 June 1998.  

WAAM, described as the most powerful pressure group in Wales  campaigned vigorously for  an end to racism, colonialism and Apartheid in South and Southern  Africa.  

ACTSA has since 1976 hosted an annual sponsored walk, the SOWETO WALK, commemorating the June 16, 1976 massacre as a fund raising exercise.  Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) is a successor organization to the Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement. For decades, funds raised through the SOWETO WALKs and other initiatives have been regularly channelled into South Africa.
