Soweto Walk 2017

On 12th June 1964 Nelson Mandela was sentenced to imprisonment at the Rivonia Trials. We have come a long way since then and many of us have been involved in other campaigns and action to end injustice and promote freedom. In our country and abroad.

Organisation of our walk this year has been disrupted by the election. It is therefore a little later on Sunday 25th June and starts at 11am from King George's Field adjacent to St. Donat's Castle, Llantwit Major.

We are raising money through a ‘10 mile Sponsored Walk’ for Dube High School in the sprawling township of Kwa Mashu in Durban, the Treatment Action Campaign and the ZISIZE Educational Trust. In 2016 we raised £6,000.

If you would like to participate then please contact Hanef Bhamjee for a sponsor form or download one using the links below.  If you are unable to attend but would like to help our fundraising efforts then please sponsor ACTSA Cymru Secretary, Mr Hanef Bhamjee, or make a donation.

Safety Notes

  • Remember we are walking along a cliff edge for much of the way.
  • Keep well clear of the cliff. Collapses have been known particularly
  • after prolonged periods of dry weather;
  • Many people will choose to walk back along the road as it is shorter.
  • If you do this please take care. It is a narrow country road, without
  • pavements. Keep to the right to face oncoming traffic;
  • If it is a hot day take on plenty of water and remember if you are at
  • the pub that alcohol tends to dehydrate;
  • Please protect against the sun you will be walking for between one
  • and two hours each way which is a lot of exposure;
  • If it is a cold day ensure you wrap up;
  • It can be hot inland and cold on the coast if a fog sets in. Be
  • prepared;
